Pioneering Techniques and Specializations
Edstrom is particularly interested in facial rejuvenation, and has pioneered
a new facelift technique, called the MACS-lift. This technique was developed
in Europe and is gaining popularity in the US, offering a facelift that
is "kinder and gentler" than the traditional. Specifically,
it uses a shorter scar (no scar behind the ear), and a simplified management
of the deep tissues (SMAS). There is a shorter recovery time, and less
risk of complications. See more details in the Procedures
The MACS-Lift is a relatively new type
of face lift, which concentrates on the lower part of the face. This procedure
corrects signs of aging from the lower eyelids down to and including the
Advantages of the MACS-Lift are:
• It uses a short scar only in front
of the ear and suspends the face strongly to the firm tissue under the
sideburn. This scar is easier to hide than that of a traditional facelift
(which is behind the ear).
• The operation is safer because
less skin is raised. This leads to less risk of bleeding and nerve injury.
• The operation time for the MACS-Lift
is 2.5 hours instead of 3.5 for the traditional facelift.
• Recovery time is 2-3 weeks instead
of 3-4 weeks.
The results of the MACS-Lift are very
natural because the facial tissue is brought back to where it previously
was. In a traditional facelift, the tissue is pulled back, often creating
an unnatural "windswept" look.
Dr. Edstrom has been selected from prominent
plastic surgeons throughout the country to participate in the National
Cosmetic Network, with whom he has produced a DVD program instructing
other plastic surgeons on the technique of the MACS-Lift.
The production team for the DVD entered
Dr. Edstrom's operating room and filmed the procedure with his commentary,
including the preoperative photographs, and postoperative photographs
from several months later. This patient gave her permission for her pictures
to be used in publications regarding the MACS-Lift.
Breast Surgery, Body Contouring and Rhinoplasty
Dr. Edstrom also specializes in breast augmentation
and lifting, reduction and gynecomastia (male breast reduction); as well
as body contouring: tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), liposuction (suction
assisted lipectomy), truncal lifts (belt lipectomy); and rhinoplasty.

Digital Imaging – State of the Art Computer Technology
– Preview the Possibilities
Dr. Edstrom has been a pioneer in the use of digital
photography to communicate the possibilities of surgery for his patients.
The images are placed on the computer and surgical plans are previewed
and discussed with the patient.
